ABOUT THE SHOT:
This is one of the longest tree lined paths I know of and it’s near my home not far from Amsterdam. Because of the great zoom range and the low point of view I got this effect of the trees packed together covered in an intense V shape of leaves. The cyclist gives a good idea of the proportion. Cycle in Gold was one of the nominated images for the Hasselblad Masters Award 2012.
Salient detail: Hasselblad is one of the best cameras available and the Hasselblad Masters is one of the most prestigious awards in the business. A friend tipped me at the very last moment and I quickly send in 5 images not having read all the rules. One of the images, Cycle in Gold, was shot with a Panasonic DMC FZ50. For those who know nothing about cameras… it’s not the best camera around, but I loved that camera. Anyway, I ended up as one of the10 finalists. It was a great honor and still is. Unfortunately I did not won the Hasselblad Masters Award, but the image was selected and presented in Beijing, Koln and Zingst.

About Dennis Frates:
Dennis Frates’ love of the outdoors began at a very early age, and led him to a passion for photographing landscapes and nature, which he has done for over 25 years. In college he earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in physical geography and ecology, and had the opportunity to study the physical landscapes he was photographing.
Dennis has photographed extensively in the western US, finding unique fine art compositions in some of America’s most stunning locations. He particularly enjoys compositions that include unusual light, and scenes that are fleeting, that can only be captured in a very short time period. He sells hundreds of photographs/prints each year, and has published five books and 19 sole photographer landscape/nature calendars.
